Though his name is a bit younger, Tatum Thompson is turning 2.
Khloe Kardashian has been candid about her months-long struggle to settle on just the right moniker for her son, and how it took a beat longer to bond with him following his July 28, 2022, birth via surrogate than it did with now-6-year-old daughter True Thompson. But her love for Tatum knows no bounds.
"I am a firm believer in that God gives you what you need and I needed you," Khloe wrote on Instagram in honor of his first birthday a year ago. "God knew my heart needed you. I needed a love only you could give me. I needed my son."
And the Good American founder is so grateful that she was able to find the right person to deliver.
"I think it is such an incredible blessing that we have this option," Khloe said of surrogacy on a May episode of the She MD podcast. "It's such a beautiful thing. But give yourself grace. Give yourself patience."
Speaking of grace and patience, Khloe has had to summon up some of both when it comes to figuring out what works and what doesn't with her kids' father, NBA player Tristan Thompson.
Off and on for years, the pair stopped dating for good while their second child was still on the way. (And Khloe admittedly made Tristan take "three DNA tests" to re-re-confirm he was Tatum's biological dad, explaining on SHE MD that the infant looked so unlike either of them, she had to be sure.)
Yet even though Khloe has said that when Tristan, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, has a habit of upsetting the apple cart when he's in town—"I don't want anyone stopping my routine," she said on The Kardashians. "I'm in my rhythm"—they "get along fine" as coparents.
And Tristan called his ex his "best friend" in a tribute for her 40th birthday in June.
But while Khloe is known for fiercely sticking to what works for her, she makes sure her kids' routine includes plenty of cuddle time—be it at home or on a private jet en route to a tropical location —and activities with their cousins.
Naturally there are the myriad family resemblances among Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Khloe, Rob Kardashian and Kylie Jenner's 13 kids. But Tatum—in addition to looking like KoKo's brother—especially reminds her of their late father, Robert Kardashian, who died in 2003.
Tatum is "sarcastic, and my dad had a really dry, silly, just crazy sense of humor," she said on SHE MD. "There’s glimmers of my dad in Tatum and I'm like, 'This is so freaking weird.' But it’s just how God works, and I love it."
Check out the strong gene pool for yourself in Khloe's cutest family photos with birthday boy Tatum:
